Ashton Brindle XXX British Hand Made Estate Pipe (Original Case)

Thanks to a special curing process developed by Ashton, this estate pipe is up to 15% lighter than comparable pipes of the same size. A very clean, very high-performing handmade estate pipe that belonged to a friend from our community, so I know exactly how carefully it was used.

On bulldog models the bowl depth is one centimeter shorter than the four centimeters considered normal, which makes it ideal for short-to-medium length smokes.

Ashton Pipes: A Work of English Craftsmanship

 

In 1978 Bill Ashton Taylor, known for more than twenty years of experience in the Dunhill workshop, founded the brand bearing his own name and opened a new chapter in the English pipe tradition. In contrast to Dunhill's increasingly mechanized approach to production, Ashton's vision focused on pure handcraft, select briar and individual character. Every Ashton pipe has carried the same spirit since the early years when Taylor shaped them with his own hands: the patience of a craftsman who speaks with the wood. Ashton used only selected Mediterranean briar that had been dried for years.

 

No block went onto the lathe unless it gave a satisfying answer to the question, “has it lived long enough?” What set him apart from other English masters was not only his workmanship but also the special “Ashtonite” finishing technique he used. This resin-based protective varnish hardens the surface without preventing the pipe from breathing, providing resistance to both heat and time. This method gives Ashton's pipes that unique “deep glow” — as if the light travels not on the surface but through the grain of the wood. Ashton's early pipes (especially the Ashton Pebble Grain and Ashton Brindle series) are regarded today by collectors as the last classic examples of modern English pipe art.

 

Each one is part of a legacy that lives on even after Bill Ashton's death in 2009. Today production is carried on by Jimmy Craig, who preserves the same recipes, the same drying processes and the same tone of mastery. To hold an Ashton pipe is really to hold, beyond an object, a master's tradition and the quiet elegance of an era. The name of this brand is still spoken of in England's misty mornings, together with the smell of wood shavings and warm briar.

 

Note: Any pipe on which you do not build up a cake layer will run hot unless you smoke at a very, very slow and systematic pace. Running hot is not a criterion for pipes without a cake.
