Brand: Bru-Bu Kompagnie | BBK Switzerland Estate Pipe

BBK, also known as Bru-Bu, is a historic Swiss pipe brand established 147 years ago. The brand holds a notable place in pipe-making history, with connections to the renowned pipe maker Former and the Bentley pipe brand. In 1986, Former himself acquired Bru-Bu.

As far as we know, BBK ceased production entirely by the late 1970s. The pipe at hand, however, strongly resembles the European-style shapes produced during the factory’s final three decades. This allows us to confidently state that we are looking at a piece that is at least 55 years old.

Draft Hole (Airway)

Drilled dead center and flush with the bottom of the bowl. Not entirely perfect, since the bowl bottom has been slightly scraped during maintenance.

Shank

Remarkably clean. No signs of tar or heavy residue; very well-maintained.

Chamber Cleaning

Quite successful. The cake has been properly removed, leaving a smooth and symmetrical chamber.

Flaws

  • The draft hole has slightly scraped the bottom of the bowl during maintenance — not ideal workmanship, but unlikely to affect the smoking quality.
  • A few minor dents on the bowl walls and shank.
  • One or two well-camouflaged fills (pits).

Rating: 6/10

Commentary

This is a very old pipe that has nevertheless retained impressive condition. While I did not observe a BBK stamp on the stummel, the BBK logo on the stem — along with its seamless fit to the shank — leaves no doubt that this pipe is indeed a BBK. It is a large, robust piece that I believe will deliver a solid smoking performance.

Note: Any pipe without a developed cake layer will tend to heat up unless smoked with a very slow and controlled cadence. For that reason, heat should not be considered a defect in pipes without an established cake.
