Brand: Charatan's Make - Special (Made between '79 and '81 - First Dunhill Era)

We are looking at a perfect pipe.

While Dunhill was the most famous pipe brand in the world at the time, Charatan's Make holds the title of being the "first" brand to produce its pipes entirely in house. While other pipe brands sourced bowls and mouthpieces from other companies and assembled them in their own factories and workshops, Charatan's Make made every part in its own facilities.

The "Special" grade pipe you are examining is an estate pipe made entirely by hand from specially selected briar, with Charatan's Make's famous straight grain structure, laid out perfectly on the briar.

The Reg. No. 203573 on the mouthpiece is the mouthpiece patent. 212DC is the stamping of the "Double Comfort" shape and mouthpiece form.

What Is the "First Dunhill Era"?

In the history of Charatan pipes, the "First Dunhill Era" is the period beginning in 1978, when the brand was sold to Dunhill by the heirs of the Lane family, and running until 1982, when Dunhill closed Charatan's Make's original factory.

The estate pipe in this listing was made at the start of the First Dunhill Era, in the original factory.

Comment: Not a pipe you come across very often, and of very high quality. I can definitely say it is a top-tier estate pipe. The way the pipe is laid out on the briar, the air hole and the shape are all very beautiful. Although it is rare, I would not call it a collector's piece, but it is certainly an excellent selection. Because Charatan's Make pipes were produced from top-level, flawless briar, the briar quality is truly wonderful.
