In 1846 a German named Jean Knodgen began making clay pipes in Belgium. In the late 19th century Jean Hillen, who joined the Knodgen family through marriage, took over the company and converted the firm to pipe production. Jean Hillen had two sons: Jos Hillen was in charge of sales and Albert Hillen of production. After World War II Albert founded the HILSON (Hillen and Sons) brand and exported his pipes all over the world.

Shank: Quite clean.

 

Draft Hole (Air Hole): Dead center of the bowl and "almost" flush with the bottom. The gap is not worth mentioning.

 

Bowl Cleanliness: Reamed very well and symmetrical.

 

Condition: 8/10

 

Mouthpiece: V Cut

 

Flaws: A few pits in various places.

 

Score: 7/10

 

Comment: A pipe I would call upper-middle class. Honestly, the way the pipe is laid out on the briar, the grain on the shank and the swirl of the birdseye are wonderful. A very good piece of briar. The fact that light shone through the shank does not graze the bottom of the bowl is most likely due to the reaming. The V cut mouthpiece is a perfect bonus. An estate pipe in very good condition.

 

 

Note: Any pipe on which you do not build up a cake layer will run hot unless you smoke at a very, very slow and systematic pace. Running hot is not a criterion for pipes without a cake.
