In 1846 a German named Jean Knödgen began producing clay pipes in Belgium. In the late 19th century Jean Hillen, who joined the Knödgen family through marriage, took over the company and reorganized the firm for pipe production. Jean Hillen had two sons: Jos Hillen was responsible for sales and Albert Hillen for production. After World War II, Albert founded the HILSON brand (Hillen and Sons) and exported his pipes all over the world.

 

After going bankrupt in 1980, it was taken over by the Belgian brand Royal Dutch Pipe Factory, based in Bree (Limburg).

Smoke Channel (Draft Hole): Drilled dead center of the chamber and flush with the chamber floor. 

 

Shank: Very clean. Mostly light in color.

 

Chamber Cleanliness: The cake layer has been very well reamed.

 

Condition: 7/10

 

Flaws: There are a few small pits in various places on the stummel. The mouthpiece has minor marks and is not in the shape we would want. A new mouthpiece could be made for it.

 

Score: 6/10

 

Comment: A very well-suited estate pipe for beginners. It has no major flaws, is made of good-quality briar and is shaped quite cleanly.

 

Note: Any pipe in which you have not built up a cake layer will run hot unless you smoke at an extremely slow, systematic cadence. Running hot is not a criterion for judging pipes that have no cake.
