"La Strada was an export brand of Italian origin. Its large-size pieces had some success in the USA and it was included in the 1970 Tinder Box catalog."

Briar Quality: Impossible to judge on rusticated pipes. I can say, however, that this is a very well-executed rustication.

 

Smoke Channel (Draft Hole): Dead center of the chamber, but it does not sit flush with the chamber floor. It should be smoked down to the bottom for a while so that this does not become a real drawback later on.

 

Shank: Very clean. Mostly light in color.

 

Chamber Cleanliness: Very well reamed, smooth.

 

Mouthpiece: V Cut

 

Condition: 8/10

 

Flaws: The only flaw is that the light shone through the shank does not come out flush with the chamber floor. But as I said, it can simply be smoked down to the bottom for a while so it does not affect the smoke later on.

 

Score: 6/10

 

Comment: An intermediate estate pipe. I particularly liked the rustication work.

 

Note: Any pipe in which you have not built up a cake layer will run hot unless you smoke at an extremely slow, systematic cadence. Running hot is not a criterion for judging pipes that have no cake.
