The name "Prince of Wales" was used from time to time by GBD for a sub-brand.

 

Danish-made, semi-freehand pipes were marked with the stampings "PRINCE OF WALES" + "DANISH LINE" + "HANDMADE IN DENMARK". The mouthpieces usually carry a white Danish flag.

Briar Quality: Cannot be judged on rusticated pipes. That said, it is one of the most beautiful rustications I have seen. The birdseye looks as though it was deliberately brought out. 

 

Draft Hole (Air Hole): Dead center of the bowl, but it does not come flush with the bottom of the bowl. To avoid this becoming a real drawback later on, the pipe should be smoked only down at the bottom for a while.

 

Shank: Quite clean. Mostly light in color.

 

Bowl Cleanliness: Reamed very well, smooth.

 

Mouthpiece: Workmanship similar to a V Cut. The hole is in the center of the mouthpiece and the draft channel widens past the halfway point of the mouthpiece.

 

Condition: 8/10

 

Flaws: The only flaw is that light shone through the shank does not come flush with the bottom of the bowl. But as I said, it can be smoked only at the bottom for a while so that it does not affect the smoke badly later on.

Comment: Even though this is a mid-level estate pipe with technical flaws, I liked it very much. Honestly, you could say that is the only reason I picked it. The rustication is truly wonderful and the flat shank is very striking. It is a pipe I would definitely want to keep, rather than pipes that smoke very well but do not appeal to my eye. With a good bottom-up break-in it will serve without trouble for years.
