Brand: Stanwell

Stanwell was founded in Denmark in 1942 by Poul Nielsen, during the material shortages of World War II. When access to Bavarian briar became impossible, Nielsen started out making pipes from Danish beech. After the war he began sourcing briar, and in order to challenge the global dominance of English pipes he changed his surname to the more English-sounding "Stanwell", choosing Stanwell as the brand name as well.

Working with legendary Danish pipe masters such as Poul Stanwell and Sixten Ivarsson, the company successfully blended series production with original, handmade designs (Danish Freehand). In 2009 the brand left its factory in Denmark and moved production to Italy.

Shank: Darkened.

Draft Hole (Air Hole): Dead center in the chamber and flush with the chamber floor.

Chamber Cleaning: Very well reamed and quite symmetrical.

Condition: 7/10

Flaws: None.

Score: 7/10

Comment: The mouthpiece on this Stanwell estate pipe is brand new and freshly made. A very nice Stanwell in terms of briar and workmanship. Given its weight relative to its size, it will be quite resistant to running hot.
