Brentegani Pipe is the one-man pipe workshop run under his own name by Michele Brentegani, working in Verona, in the Veneto region of northern Italy. Recorded as born in 1989, the maker began making pipes in 2015 and turned it into his full-time profession in 2020. No mass production comes out of the workshop; every piece passes through the same hands from design to final polish.
From Wood to Pipes
Brentegani's diploma has nothing to do with pipemaking: he trained in traditional Chinese medicine and tui na massage. Woodworking, however, was a pursuit carried over from childhood; before pipes he made unrelated objects such as bows and bamboo flutes. In 2015, after seeing a friend's churchwarden pipe, he tried making one of his own. He managed to shape the bowl with the means available to him; the mouthpiece, however, remained a problem he could not solve, both in method and material. According to the account, this knot was resolved after correspondence with Brebbia, one of Italy's established manufacturers, resulted in three mouthpieces being sent to him. The next few years passed working part-time and largely through trial and error.
From Show to Academy
His period of self-teaching was followed by contacts established with other pipemakers; records mention the guidance of Ulrik Ash, known as Pipe Ulrik, at this stage. The workshop first announced its name to a wider circle in 2018, at the PipAlp gathering held in Triveneto. In 2020 he was admitted to the Accademia della Pipa, whose entry criteria are strictly maintained; the masters he worked with there are recorded as including Gabriele Dal Fiume, Davide Iafisco, Mimmo Romeo, and Gioacchino Sauro. The same year the workshop became full-time. This trajectory overlaps with the master-apprentice transmission tradition of Italian handmade pipemaking.
Material and Colour
The workshop's main material is the light-coloured variety of Italian briar; alongside this, bog oak and olive wood are also regularly worked. Materials such as horn, bamboo, ebony, snakewood, and tagua come into play as shank inserts, rings, and decorative elements. The brand's most easily recognisable trait, however, is colour. Azure or lapis blue is the maker's most frequently used tone on vulcanite mouthpieces; sea-foam green and magenta are also seen. Bowl staining is kept more restrained, and the colours of the bowl, mouthpiece, and any inserts are chosen relative to one another. The same sensitivity to colour is pursued equally in light Italian briar and in dark bog oak and olive wood.
Shape Repertoire and Lightness
Brentegani's interest extends both to English-French classics and to the Danish school that took shape after 1950. His catalogue includes established shapes such as billiard, brandy, and prince alongside freeform pieces. There is also an intermediate group where the two tendencies meet: pipes that retain the recognisability of the classic silhouette while departing from the rule in one or two details. The common thread is lightness. In Italian brand guides, Brentegani's work is found to have thin walls and measured composition; it is noted that most of the pipes stay under 35 grams.
