Paolo Becker is the name of the handmade pipe brand he founded in Rome together with his father, Fritz Becker, and which has carried his surname since 1979. The father-and-son workshop operated on a scale entirely different from Italian pipe making's large production houses: output never rose to factory level, every piece passed through the same hands from start to finish, and the brand cannot be placed within a single school. Paolo Becker died in December 2014; the workshop is carried on by his son, Federico Becker.
Fritz Becker
The brand's founder, Fritz Becker, was born in Vienna to a Jewish family and was forced to leave Austria in the late 1930s. After the war ended he settled in Rome, where he lived until his death in 1991. Becker, who spoke several languages, is said to have worked as a translator for British intelligence during the war years and to have later represented the World Jewish Congress before the Vatican; both accounts rest on a single narrative.
Becker, whose main pursuit was painting and sculpture, moved into pipe making following a habit of reworking the pipes he himself used. His first attempts took shape in the attic in Rome that he also used as a painting studio.
Founding of the Brand
Paolo Becker began joining his father's work regularly in 1974. Records indicate that the pair's first regular production was made under the "Carmignani – Hand Made" stamp for Carmignani, one of Rome's established tobacconists; the Becker name was not stamped on pipes until 1979, and this date is taken as the brand's starting point. From the 1980s onward, most of the production went to the United States.
Records indicate that in 1989 Paolo Becker opened a joint space in Rome, serving as both shop and workshop, together with Giorgio Musicò, who ran Carmignani. The Becker & Musicò line that emerged from this partnership consisted of pipes close to measured, unadorned English classics; Paolo Becker worked on this line with Musicò's son, Massimo. Becker & Musicò production later stopped.
Grades, Material, and Shape
The grading system is built on playing-card names: the clubs and hearts series rank the two, three, and four steps, with the Royal Flush stamp at the very top. The upper grades are distinguished both by grain quality and by the complexity of the shape.
Bowls were made from plateau briar sourced from Calabria in southern Italy. Paolo Becker also worked with morta, olivewood, and cherry wood, and favored acrylic and vulcanite for mouthpieces and boxwood and silver for ornamentation. Both sandblast and smooth finishes are found on the surface.
The Becker signature is counted among workshops that cannot be placed within a single school. Under the same stamp, one end holds measured shapes close to English classics, and the other holds asymmetric compositions in the top grades reminiscent of the Danish school; the Italian neoclassical tradition also falls within this range.
Continuity
The pipes made while Fritz Becker was alive cannot be attributed to a single name: in pieces from the 1970s and 1980s, father and son worked together. After 1991, every stage of a pipe passed through Paolo Becker's own hands alone. This scale and working method sets the brand apart from houses running catalog production and places it within the definition of artisan pipe making. With the workshop passing to Federico Becker, the Becker name has reached its third generation.
