The brand was founded in 1923 by Raoul Amiel in Philippeville (present-day Skikda), Algeria. The factory employed about thirty people when it closed in the early 1960s. Raoul's son Bernard Amiel (d. 2008) ran GBA Synergie, which bought Ropp in 1988 and held the brand until 1991.
