Ulmer Maserholzpfeifen is the collective name for pipes carved in and around Ulm in southern Germany from tree root and trunk burl, most finished with a chased silver cap. This production, which spread widely long before briar (funda kökü) reached European workbenches, was never brought under a guild's roof and so remained a rural sideline to the end; it nonetheless produced a pipe type that bears the region's name. "Ulm" here refers not only to the present-day city but to the wide rural hinterland that fell under the city's authority: Geislingen, Söflingen, Pfuhl, Waldstetten, and Rechberg are the known links in that network.

A Craft Without a Guild

Records place the earliest document on the subject in 1695. Two craftsmen, reporting that they had been making wooden tobacco pipes for several years and covering their bodies in silver and tombac sheet, asked the city council for a charter and guild status; the request was refused that same summer, on the grounds that they had learned the trade neither through proper apprenticeship nor through the customary journeyman travel. Twenty years later, when the pipe makers of Geislingen said they numbered fifty and asked for their own guild, the outcome was no different; this second refusal in 1716 permanently filed pipe making under "free craft." That had two sides: there was no master's right, no apprenticeship requirement, and no cap on the number of workers, but pipe makers were in constant friction with the sales privileges of guild-organized tradesmen; in 1824 even the trade in pipe stems was closed off to them.

Being a sideline did not keep the workshops small. Records show that in 1790 two pipe-maker brothers, besides their bench in Ulm, employed dozens of people in their homes in settlements such as Langenau, Rechberg, and Söflingen. Even so, the number of those who counted the trade as their main livelihood did not exceed forty-five between the late 18th century and 1812. Local records put the number of masters engaged in the trade in Waldstetten around 1790–1800 at sixty.

Maser Wood and Its Supply

Maserholz is wood taken from a tree's root and burl regions, irregular in grain, heavy, and slow to catch fire. A production handbook from 1830 lists elm, ash, alder, birch, poplar, maple, juniper, rowan, walnut, and boxwood as suitable species. Since none of these are fully fire-resistant, both the bowl and the smoke channel were lined with a thin metal sleeve; this solution shows clearly where wood stood, relative to briar's later dominance, among pipe bowl materials. The raw material was brought in by so-called "Maserhauer," root gatherers; sources mention the forests of Bavaria, Württemberg, and Bohemia, Switzerland and Tyrol, and Anatolia for boxwood. As demand grew, gatherers stopped settling for dead stumps and began felling trees for fresh root; this destruction is openly condemned in 18th- and 19th-century Württemberg forestry ordinances.

Kloben, Ungarnform, and the Silver Cap

Collecting literature recognizes two basic molds. In the Ungarnform, the bowl is thin and tall, clearly rises above the shank's neck, and is covered with a flat cap. The Ulmer Kloben is the local variant of this type: an ahead-tapering wooden ridge runs down from the front of the bowl, the bowl and neck stand roughly level with each other, and the cap rises like a helmet or dome, often pierced for ventilation. In museum records this form is at times also listed under "Sackpfeife." In both molds the bowl and shank were linked with fine chains, both for security and as ornament. It is said that the Kloben form was devised in the 1730s in Ulm by Jakob Glöckle, a weaver who carved pipes in his spare time; around 1840, one hundred and fourteen separate bowl types are recorded as having been made, most of them Ungarnform.

The silverwork was usually commissioned not in Ulm but in Blaubeuren, Heilbronn, and especially Schwäbisch Gmünd; the latter was a center housing around two hundred fifty silversmith masters in the mid-18th century. This practice of outsourcing led Ulm's silversmiths to sue in 1829; the council ruled that pipes ordered from the countryside could be sold with foreign silverwork, while those made in Ulm had to be worked by local silversmiths. The "13" mark often found on the cap's edge indicates the lot system valid in Germany until 1 January 1888: thirteen of sixteen units silver, i.e. 812.5 fineness. A master's mark, by contrast, is rare. Two-plane caps left room for the owner's initials, occupation, or hunting scenes. The crested helmet (Raupenhelm) worn by the Bavarian army until King Ludwig II's death in 1886 also found its way onto cap molds; Ulm had been annexed to Bavaria in 1802, then passed to Württemberg in 1810.

Decline

Production fell off sharply after 1840. Cheap porcelain bowls, increasingly showy carved meerschaum pipes, and, from 1850, the spread of the cigar narrowed the market; after the 1880s alder and juniper root also became harder to find. Records show that by 1870 only three pipe makers remained in the city of Ulm; among the names advertising "genuine Ulm maser pipes" in late-century directories, most were sellers rather than makers. In the same years, briar's spread via Saint-Claude largely removed the need for local root wood. Records indicate that a German workshop in the Odenwald continued producing simplified Ulm forms with new silver caps into the mid-1990s. Today these pipes are preserved in public and private collections, chiefly local German museums.
