Master carver Shizuo Arita (b. 1935) withdrew from commercial production in 1998 but continued making pipes; as of 2009 annual output was about 100 pipes. Grading rises in the order S (sandblasted), T, S, N, A, and AA; AA pipes carry two ant stamps, other grades one. The first two digits of the number give the year of production.
