Master carver Takeo Arita (b. 1971) has worked in his father Shizuo's workshop since age six. Grading rises in the order X (rustic or smooth), Y (smooth), and Z (superior-quality pipes). In dating, a two-digit number gives the year of production and a three-digit number the serial number.
