The pipes are stamped with letters from the early Etruscan alphabet: R for rustic, S for sandblasted, O for smooth with a bird's-eye pattern, and F for smooth with a flame pattern. The grade is indicated by the letter repeated once, twice, or three times, rising in that order. The two-digit number gives the year of production (12 = 2012).
