Facing a briar shortage during World War II, Kaufman Brothers & Bondy produced pipes under the name "Mission Briar" from manzanita wood gathered in California; this production declined after 1943, once Algerian briar shipments resumed. Monterey is also a sub-brand of KB&B. The shape number 55 in the stamp and the Carburetor patent numbered 2082106 coincide with Kaywoodie's system; since Kaywoodie made Carburetor pipes after 1948, manzanita production must have continued after the war as well.
