Peterson's distinguishing feature is the gap between the shank and the stem; the slightly tapered tenon ensures a tight fit even as the wood or stem material expands, and lets the stem be removed and refitted while the pipe is still hot. In the early years, horn condensers were used in the Deluxe and Premier series, giving way to Bakelite in the 1940s and to aluminum today.
