Klompen Kloggen appears in the aromatic section of the 1776 Tobacco Company catalog, prepared under Sterling Tobacco Co. in Illinois. Per the maker's recipe, the blend is hand-mixed and contains shag-cut Burley, Virginia bright, long-cut Virginia, No. 10 Virginia, Carolina leaf, Connecticut shade-grown leaf, and Turkish Yenidje. Its name is a reference to Dutch tradition; the blend is also kept light in that style, calibrated so as not to bite the tongue.
The Connecticut shade leaf and Yenidje in the mix add both mellowness and a light spiciness to the Burley-Virginia body. Since it stays measured in nicotine and taste, it falls into the all-day-smokable class; it suits smokers avoiding heavy Latakia blends who want a light aromatic. The brand takes its name from the takeover of a now-closed Pennsylvania tobacco shop called 1776; per records the blends were sold by mail, in bulk quantities.
