Dill's Best is a historic American pipe tobacco carrying the name of the J. G. Dill company, founded in Richmond, Virginia. Packaging information traces the brand's origins to the second half of the nineteenth century; a 1946 trademark filing lists the name's first use as 1885, though some tins bear the date 1848. The product changed hands over time, carried on first by the U.S. Tobacco Company and later by major firms in the American tobacco industry.
The blend follows the classic mold of American house-style tobaccos: a Burley-heavy base is mellowed with a measured amount of Virginia. It was sold in several cuts — granulated plug, slice, and rubbed — with the leaf rubbed from the plug retaining moisture for a long time. The taste is nutty, dry, and lightly sweet, carrying no pronounced flavoring. With the decline of pipe smoking in America, the brand was withdrawn from the market and today is only of historical interest.
