Soppeng tobacco is a finely cut product prepared using a traditional method in Indonesia. Leaves soaked in a type of palm-derived sugar are hung on strings in a manner resembling Latakia production, and smoked from below by burning coconut husks; the flavor passes to the tobacco through this smoke rather than directly. After smoking, the leaves are wrapped in banana leaf, packed into thick bamboo tubes, and rested for at least six months before sale.
The product arrives as a jet-black, dried block and needs moistening before lighting. It burns fast and steadily, without gurgling. Despite being fully toasted, the burnt taste stays low; a woody flavor from the bamboo lingers on the palate after smoking. Its satiety and nicotine load are very low, so it can be smoked any time of day; it's aimed at those looking for an experience outside the usual blend categories and light tobacco users.
