Flake

Bulwark Flake is one of the old names in the English pipe tobacco tradition. Per records it was manufactured for a long time by Imperial Tobacco and later continued by Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. in Kendal. It is a pressed and sliced, dark-colored Virginia flake, said to carry a light fruity top flavoring.

The slices are dense and moist, needing to be rubbed out and aired before filling. In the smoke, dark bread, dried plum and sugared Virginia tones come forward; the flavoring stays at a level that does not overtake the tobacco. It carries above-medium nicotine and burns slowly. Appeals to smokers familiar with classic English flakes like Digger, Walnut Flake or Original Virginia Flake, seeking a traditional, satisfying Virginia.
