Dark Stoved (Royal Vintage)

Dark Stoved in Butera's Royal Vintage series is an unflavored flake tobacco built entirely on Virginia leaf. Per records the blend was prepared by McClelland. Flue-cured Virginia leaf is darkened through an additional heat treatment, then pressed into flake form.

The slices are dark-colored and are rubbed out for filling. Because the heavy heat treatment converts much of the leaf's sugar, a flat, dry profile emerges in the smoke; the sweet-spicy intensity expected of dark Virginia flakes is limited. Nicotine is medium, and it can bite the tongue if smoked quickly. It carries no flavor casing. It is no longer in production today and is found only in old stock.
