P. J. Carroll & Co. was a company founded in Dundalk that was, for a long time, one of the leading manufacturers in the Irish tobacco market. Maltan Ready Rubbed is the company's product offering its dark Virginia slice ready-rubbed for use; its packaging also carries the wording "Maltan Rich Dark Flake."

Because the pressed and matured mahogany-colored Virginia leaf is brought to a fine ribbon, it needs no further rubbing before filling. In the smoke, dark bread, molasses and lightly smoky tones come forward; no casing is used. Nicotine is medium. It is no longer in production today and stands as a historical record for those seeking Ireland's old household blends.
