Velvan Plug

Velvan Plug is a pressed-cake tobacco manufactured by the Irish firm P. J. Carroll & Co. Sweet light Virginia and dark Virginia leaf are pressed together, with a light fruit essence applied on top.

Being sold in plug form, it needs to be sliced with a knife and rubbed out before smoking; this structure lets the tobacco's moisture be preserved for a long time. In the smoke, the dense, sweet Virginia base brought on by pressing comes forward, while the fruit casing stays subdued. Nicotine is medium and it burns slowly. It is no longer in production today; it stands among the examples of traditional plug tobaccos used daily in Ireland for many years.
