Picaroon 1690 is the Latakia-forward pressed-plug record in the Century line. Per the seller's description, latakia, Turkish orientals, virginia, cavendish and perique from Louisiana's St. James district are brought together; the leaf is rested for thirty days in Kentucky bourbon barrels. The name comes from the Spanish word "picaroon," referring to seventeenth-century pirates.
The plug form lets the tobacco undergo additional fermentation during pressing; the result is a full-bodied, smoky and spicy smoke. Perique brings dark fruit and pepper notes, the orientals a dry, herbal sharpness, and the barrel rest a lightly sweet background. Given its heavy nicotine and flavor load, this is a record aimed at experienced smokers.
