Burley Flake #1

Burley Flake #1 is the first member of Cornell & Diehl's five-blend Burley Flake series. It is an unflavored flake in which dark burley and red Virginia are pressed and sliced; only a small amount of perique is added on top. The series as a whole is built around burley leaf, aiming to show how it changes with different components.

Dark burley forms the blend's body and nutty, earthy core; red Virginia adds a bready sweetness, while perique brings a thin plum-and-spice edge. Because of its pressed structure it burns slowly and gives a cool smoke. Nicotine strength runs high. According to available records, the components draw closer together with aging.
