Craven Mixture

Craven Mixture is a historic English blend based on the mixture London tobacconist Don José Joaquin Carreras prepared for the third Earl of Craven in the 1860s. Its appearance under the name "Arcadia Mixture" in J. M. Barrie's 1890 book My Lady Nicotine introduced it to a wide readership, and it's also referenced as Dr. Watson's tobacco in the Sherlock Holmes stories. The Carreras company was later absorbed into Rothmans, and the blend was subsequently discontinued.

Its composition includes Syrian Latakia, Oriental tobaccos, and not-too-light Virginia leaf; records indicate fire-cured leaf was also used. Its profile is described as flat, unified, and full, with pronounced nicotine. It was sold in knife-lid tins. Since it can no longer be found today, attempts have been made to recreate the blend; McClelland's 221b Series Arcadia and Cornell & Diehl's Yale Mixture are cited examples in this direction.
