Max Erik 1989 is an unadulterated Virginia blend named for the birth year of Erik Stokkebye's son, marking the family's fifth generation. Aged Virginia leaves from Georgia and North and South Carolina are pressed into cakes for a week, then sliced and presented as flake.
Since no additives are used, the taste comes entirely from the leaf's own sugars; grass, light fruit and bready tones stand out. It suits Virginia enthusiasts accustomed to rubbing or folding the flake for a slow, patient smoke. Thanks to its pressed structure, the taste is expected to settle further with jar time.
