Mephisto

Mephisto is among the first blends offered under the G. L. Pease name. It is a mixed-cut blend combining dark-looking broken flake, ribbon, and coarsely cut pieces. Syrian latakia is used in its composition, joined by Cyprus latakia and Oriental leaves; records also note a light rum top note.

The smoke is reported to be rich, sweet, and spicy; Syrian latakia's distinctive aroma stays beneath the Cyprus latakia and Oriental leaves. In a warehouse fire in November 2004, the aged Syrian latakia stock used in the blend was destroyed, and production was halted indefinitely as a result; it has been announced that the blend will return if sufficient quality Syrian leaf becomes available.
