Black Pipe Pigtail is the dark record in Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s fine-cut pigtail line. The rope is pressed and steam-cooked until it turns fully black; the resulting tobacco gives a cool, mild smoke with a leathery undertone reminiscent of unsweetened cavendish. The firm's twist tobaccos are traditionally made for both pipe smoking and chewing.
According to records this line carries a light touch of anise flavouring, though the leaf itself still defines the main character. Since it is sold in rope form, thin coins are cut off and rubbed out for filling; it is aimed at smokers who want a slow smoke and are used to working with dark leaf.
