Brown Irish Twist Liquorice Plum.

This is a product of Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s old-fashioned rope (twist) production in Kendal. Dark fire-cured leaves are twisted into rope; within the Brown Irish Twist family, this body carries the natural smoky, earthy character of fire curing untouched. In the Liquorice Plum version, the rope is finished with a liquorice-root and plum-based flavouring, so alongside the sharpness of the raw leaf, a dark fruit sweetness also appears. The rope is sliced coin-thin and rubbed out; since moisture runs high, airing it before loading the pipe is standard practice.

It is a full-bodied tobacco sitting at the upper end for nicotine; it may be heavy for anyone not accustomed to ropes built on dark Virginia and fire-cured leaf. Records note that part of this rope family has traditionally also been consumed as chewing tobacco.
