Louisiana Flake Burnt Ends

Louisiana Flake is Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s single Virginia-Perique-axis flake; alongside the Virginia, Burley, dark fire-cured leaf, and Perique are added, and the mixture is pressed into flake. The name "Burnt Ends" describes not the product itself but its presentation: the darker, irregular end pieces that come off the edges of the press mold are gathered and sold separately, so the tin contains broken, thick pieces rather than neat slices.

Perique is used here in moderation, giving a fig-like, lightly spicy sweetness rather than a sharp vinegary edge. The chocolate-like taste added on top rounds off the edges of the Virginia-Perique combination that could otherwise turn sharp. Suited to smokers accustomed to pressed English flakes who want a medium-bodied VaPer with a measured topping.
