Sliced Black Rum Twist is the factory-sliced form of black Burma, made entirely by tightly twisting fire-cured leaf into rope. The coin-shaped slices arrive ready enough to pack straight into the bowl, and a short airing is usually enough.
Its character rests on a dark core reminiscent of earth, leather, and cigar leaf; the rum topping on top adds a sweet, fragrant layer to that dark base. Because of the smoky intensity from fire-curing and the high nicotine, it calls for slow smoking; an entry designed for smokers familiar with dark, strong Burma tradition. Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. is one of the English producers that continues traditional twist (rope) production at its Kendal factory, hand-twisting fire-cured leaves into rope form. Because twist tobaccos don't go through a pressure-cooking stage, they stay intense in nicotine; records indicate these ropes are sold for both chewing and pipe smoking.
