Sweet Plum Twist is Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.'s plum-topped version of its brown Burma base. Fire-cured leaves are twisted into a fine rope; the tobacco arrives as a dense mass that yields small coin-like slices when cut.
The pouch aroma is oily and spicy; on the smoke, the earthy, smoky core of the fire-curing is preserved while the sweet topping and inverted sugar worked into the leaf during production add a sweet top layer to the smoke. Since it isn't steam-cooked under pressure, it stays intense in nicotine; it needs to be thinly sliced and smoked slowly. An entry for those wanting a topped but still strong Burma tobacco. Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. is one of the English producers that continues traditional twist (rope) production at its Kendal factory, hand-twisting fire-cured leaves into rope form. Because twist tobaccos don't go through a pressure-cooking stage, they stay intense in nicotine; records indicate these ropes are sold for both chewing and pipe smoking.
