This product is not a finished blend but a single blending leaf sold on its own: pure Latakia. Latakia is produced by curing Oriental leaf over smoky fires for an extended period; this process gives the leaf a nearly black color and an easily recognizable tar-like, smoky aroma. Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. offers this leaf as a ribbon cut; it can be smoked on its own, but is more often mixed in measured amounts into other blends to add smokiness.

The "Syrian" in the name refers to the leaf's historical origin — the original variety processed around Latakia, Syria. Records indicate Syrian Latakia production ceased decades ago, and nearly all the leaf on the market has since shifted to Cyprian origin; indeed, the pure Latakia the producer currently sells is described as Cyprian leaf. The Syrian-type leaf is considered less sharp, sweeter, and more reminiscent of smoked wood. Smoked on its own, it gives a heavy smoky taste sitting atop a woody, floral, lightly spicy core; it is unflavored and a component that needs to be dosed according to the blend.
