Westmorland Slices

Westmorland Slices is a broken flake tobacco from Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. carrying the old name of the maker's own region. Dark-toned Virginia leaf is pressed and matured with fire-cured leaf support; the block, which reaches an ebony darkness, is then cut into strips. It comes out of the tin as broken flakes, so it can be packed folded or rubbed out and thinned. A licorice-and-honey-molasses-reminiscent flavoring is applied along with the distinctive floral "Lakeland" essence of Kendal tradition.

On the smoke, wood smoke, leather, a light cigar-leaf note, and a tart-spicy Virginia base stand out; the Lakeland essence stays subtle enough not to mask this base and is felt more in the aroma. The smoke is creamy and full, burns cool when well aired, and doesn't bite the tongue unless forced. Nicotine is above average, so it's heavy going for those new to the pipe.
