This blend arose from a partnership in the latter half of the 1940s between San Francisco's Greenfield & Winther firm and actor Edward G. Robinson; Robinson allowed the use of his name only after the final recipe had been agreed upon. It is an old-style American Burley mixture built on a ribbon-cut Burley base, joined by black Cavendish, a small amount of Latakia, and a measured plum top note.

Its character sits closer to the lightly flavored classic Burley line than to heavy aromatics: a nutty, earthy body, a fine smokiness from the Latakia, and a fruity sweetness left in the background. Suited to smokers wanting a medium-bodied everyday blend that can be smoked all day, and to anyone curious about the palate of old American shop blends. Rights to the recipe passed to Sutliff in 1969, and the tobacco has continued to be made under that company since.
