Union Leader

Union Leader is a classic over-the-counter (OTC) blend based mainly on Burley leaf. It's ribbon cut with a light top flavoring added; sources note its smoke carries a cigarette-like, dry, sharp character. The Virginia share adds a limited sweetness to the Burley's earthy taste. Nicotine level counts as above the medium band.

It was one of the cheap, widely distributed tobaccos in America for many years; in its later period it was produced by House of Windsor and was withdrawn from the market when the company closed. Today it's mostly remembered through collectible tins and as an example of the era's pipe culture.
