Momoyama is a Virginia-based pipe tobacco, supported by Burley and Oriental leaf, produced by Japan Tobacco for the Japanese domestic market. Records indicate it was launched in 1934, and, in keeping with Japanese pipe tradition, it's presented in a very fine, kizami-style cut. It carries a light flavoring in the direction of rum-like liqueur, caramel, and fruit.
Because of the fine cut, it smokes fast and cool; the initial sweet, aromatic character gives way to a more classic tobacco taste as the bowl progresses. Strength is kept low. It's a profile suited to smokers wanting to step outside Western-style blends, looking for a lightly flavored, short smoke. Since it isn't exported, it's hard to find outside Japan.
