Ser Jacopo English Mixture

Ser Jacopo English Mixture is one of the blends produced in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp for the Italian pipe maker Ser Jacopo. At the request of founder Giancarlo Guidi, a threefold series was prepared — one English, one aromatic, one Scottish-style; records indicate these tobaccos reached the US in 2001 via Iwan Ries. Its contents include golden and red Virginias plus a small amount of doubly fermented black cavendish, with Cyprus latakia added on top.

What sets the blend apart from classic English mixtures is a pronounced Scotch whisky casing accompanying the latakia smoke. Latakia is more a character definer than a proportional dominator: smoke and wood notes frame Virginia's bready sweetness, while the whisky leaves a light harshness and grain sweetness at the finish. Suited to smokers accustomed to latakia-containing blends who don't mind a measured casing alongside them.
