Hi-Plane

Hi-Plane is one of Larus & Brother Company's blends combining Virginia and Burley leaves. Records indicate deer tongue, a plant often used in old American pipe tobaccos, was added to the mix; since this plant contains coumarin, it gives the blend a natural sweetness reminiscent of vanilla and freshly cut grass. This achieves a lightly flavored character without becoming a syrupy aromatic.

On the flavor axis, Burley's nutty, bready base sits alongside Virginia's sugar; body is medium. The blend was discontinued long ago and today is found only among the rare records in old stock tins. Of interest to those curious about the palate of mid-20th-century American shop blends.
