Navy Cavendish

Navy Cavendish is a blend in the Matured Virginias line that takes the old sailors' tradition as its model. The method used to keep tobacco from spoiling on long voyages during the age of sail — moistening it with liquor and holding it under pressure — is applied here too: matured Virginias are moistened with dark Jamaican rum and pressed, and the resulting cake is sliced into flake.

Rather than masking Virginia's natural sugar, the rum adds a molasses-like depth to it, so despite being flavored, the blend preserves Virginia character. The flake structure gives a slow, cool burn. Discontinued when McClelland closed in 2018.
