Canterbury is one of the bulk blends McCranie's tobacco shop in Charlotte, North Carolina, has made under its own name. Matured Virginia leaf forms its core, joined per the shop's recipe by Xanthi-type Turkish Oriental leaf. The Oriental share is enough to break up the Virginia's sugary flatness and give the blend a dry, faintly tangy edge; there's no Latakia.
Described as an all-day "cake tobacco" that can be smoked in the same pipe repeatedly, with moderate satiety. Since it carries no flavoring, it's a middle-ground option for smokers used to unflavored Virginia blends who nonetheless find straight Virginia a bit flat on its own. McCranie's was founded in 1979 by Tom McCranie and has since been run by his sons; the shop's bulk-blend list runs to dozens of entries and distribution is largely limited to its own stores.
