Kapitanskiy

Kapitanskiy, whose name means "belonging to the captain" in Russian, is a pipe tobacco produced during the Soviet era at factories under the RSFSR Ministry of the Food Industry; records indicate Leningrad's Tobacco Factory No. 2 was among its main producers, and the brand lasted from at least the 1950s into the 1990s. The Soviet pipe-tobacco tradition doesn't use Latakia; instead it relies on Oriental leaves grown domestically and around the Caucasus and Crimea, along with Virginia-Oriental blends. Kapitanskiy is noted as following this line, a mixture lightly sweetened with rum essence.

It is not in production today; tins circulating on the market are old stock in collectors' hands. With its dry, dusty Oriental character and measured rum casing, it draws the interest of those looking for a historical palate different from Western English mixtures. Standard codes on the packaging indicate some tins were printed between 1974 and 1983.
