Medium Navy Cut is the medium-bodied pipe interpretation of the Navy Cut line from the Nottingham house John Player & Sons. The brand joined Imperial Tobacco in 1901, and the Navy Cut name became widespread in Britain from the late 19th century onward. Reports indicate this medium-strength member of the line reached a particularly wide following in the south of England.
The blend is built by adding Burley to a Virginia-heavy base, presented pressed and sliced as flake. It is plain in flavoring, with a bready, herbal character; nicotine is medium. When the pipe tobacco division split off from Imperial, the line fell outside its scope and production stopped at the end of 2015. It appeals to those interested in the unflavored English flake tradition.
