Brasil belongs to Robert McConnell's single-varietal line and is made entirely of Brazilian cigar leaf. The coarsely cut, dark brown leaf is unflavored; the taste rests on the earthy, tart, faintly sweet tones characteristic of cigar tobacco. Reports note that opening the tin gives an aroma reminiscent of aged Virginia and Perique.
Nicotine is pronounced and flavor intensity high; it tends to burn fast and hot, so it calls for slow smoking. It is used mainly by home blenders as a body-deepening component, and smoked alone it appeals to experienced smokers. The brand was founded in London in 1848; production today is carried out in Germany by Kohlhase & Kopp.
