Shakespeare is one of the replacement blends offered after Dunhill-branded tobaccos ceased production, marketed as a stand-in for Ye Olde Signe, which Dunhill began producing in 1916. It is made under the Robert McConnell name by the German firm Kohlhase & Kopp. The tin holds fine-ribbon Golden Virginia together with bulkier Red Virginia, the two cuts distinguishable by eye; the aroma is sugary, lightly spicy, and suggests fruit.
Casing is very light; when rested in a jar, a faint green, tea-like note with a touch of spice and fruit comes forward. It burns slow and steady, the smoke is light and easy-flowing, and strength sits at a medium level; as the bowl progresses the flavor intensifies and tones reminiscent of cigarette tobacco increase. It suits smokers who want to follow the distinction between two Virginia types and prefer a mild, lightly flavored smoke.
