Rich Virginia is a tinned blend from the London-based Sobranie house, made of unflavored Virginia tobaccos. Though the Sobranie name is mostly associated in the pipe world with latakia-forward mixtures like Balkan Sobranie and 759, the house also released plain, latakia-free Virginia tins during the same period; Rich Virginia belongs to this second line. Records indicate the blend was built by adding stoved dark Virginia alongside lemon-yellow Virginia leaves, presented in ribbon cut.
Its character revolves around orange peel, lightly fermented dark fruit, and a grainy sweetness reminiscent of bread crust; nicotine strength sits somewhere between light and medium, making it suited to those seeking a Virginia they can smoke all day. Since Sobranie's pipe tobacco production has ended, the blend is not in production today and is found only in old stock tins. A historical reference point for smokers wanting to know the unflavored Virginia idiom — the balance between sugar sweetness and tartness.
