Anomalous

Anomalous is a crumble-cake-form blend Sutliff released in 2023 for its Per Georg Jensen-signed Birds of a Feather series. Records indicate its composition includes red and steamed Virginia leaves, a substantial proportion of Virginia cavendish, a small amount of high-quality burley, and the Katerini perique that gives the blend its name. Katerini perique is obtained by fermenting an oriental leaf grown in Greece under pressure using the Louisiana perique method; compared to classic perique, it gives a lower-intensity but more pronounced raisin-and-plum-direction flavor.

On the palate, Virginia's sugar and sweet-bread sweetness stand out, topped with raisin, ripe dark fruit, an orange-peel sharpness, and a fermented herbal tartness. It leaves a peppery, black-pepper-like touch at the back of the nose. It's considered light-to-medium in nicotine, burns slowly, and may need several relights. A record for smokers who know the unflavored Virginia-perique structure but are seeking a fruitier interpretation instead of the customary perique sharpness. It is no longer in production.
