Bloemfontein Navy Cut is a classic Virginia flake from the German tobacco house Tabac Benden. Virginias of varying color from the Commonwealth, Europe, and America are pressed under high pressure with no other tobacco type added and matured for an extended period; the result is thin but tightly packed slices that can be folded or rubbed out for packing. The blend's starting point is cited as the old 1947 Capstan Navy Flake tins; an exact copy of that period's recipe was not possible because of coumarin, whose use is no longer permitted. Production takes place at the Mac Baren facilities.
The taste leans bright and light-colored Virginia: natural sweetness, notes of bread and yeasty dough, with a dried-fruit-leaning background. The casing is kept very light. It suits smokers looking for a near-unflavored Virginia flake carrying the sweetness that comes from pressing, who are willing to work with the slices.
